5G Action Plan: From Research to Trials

 

 

A Roadmap Strategy for pan-European trials will support European Commission 5G Action Plan towards the 5G pre-commercial phase, and supported by a successful European collaborative research.

BARCELONA March 1st, 2017- European action to develop 5G technology has been progressing dramatically under the leadership of the 5G-Public Private Partnership (5G-PPP), notably after the launch of 19 research projects in the first phase started in 2015. The progress achieved to date are highlighted in a new White Paper – “5G innovations for new business opportunities” – presented during Mobile World Congress in a Press and Media Event held on February 28th, with the participation of European Commission, 5G Infrastructure Association member companies and vertical industries.

The event was opened by Roberto Viola, Director General of DG CONNECT at the European Commission. A CTO panel attended by leading 5G global players, discussed progress being achieved through European 5G Research and the emergence of 5G standards. Representatives of vertical industries and the public sector did also outline their programs addressing 5G Action Plan objectives to accelerate the deployment of 5G in Europe between now and 2020. A 5G trials roadmap strategy, was discussed for the implementation of advanced pre-commercial and pan European trials to be launched in key sectors in 2018 and promoted through European public events, in view of ensuring Europe leadership in the context of the accelerated global agenda for the introduction of 5G.

“As the initiator of the 5G Public Private Partnership and of the 5G Action Plan, the European Commission is instrumental in enabling an inclusive approach towards industry and vertical sectors” said Christine Leurquin, Acting Chair of the Board of the 5G Infrastructure Association. “This approach gives positive results allowing an open dialogue and collaboration will all stakeholders in order to create a truly 5G connected society by 2020. Today I am very pleased to say that the preparations for 5G deployment are on schedule, including research projects, standardisation and pan-European 5G trials.”

Roberto Viola indicated, in his opening statement: “With the solid partnership in R&D represented by 5G PPP, and with the pan-european trials roadmap worked out as a stakeholders response to the 5G Action Plan, Europe should now move towards showcasing 5G in real life environment.”

Jean-Pierre Bienaimé, Secretary General of the 5G Infrastructure Association, highlighted: “The 5G-Infrastructure Association is happy to issue at this event our new White Paper, as well as the version 1 of the EU Trials Roadmap Strategy, the main objectives of which being to demonstrate benefits of 5G to vertical sectors, and associate them to the standardization and development process, and to show a clear path to successful and timely deployment in Europe.”
